We are committed to ensuring that John Hope Settlement House continues to provide leadership and dynamic human services and advocacy for children, youth and families.

The richness of the corporation’s history is embedded in it’s mission.  Founded in 1929 as an organization to benefit and serve the African American community and eventually, the broader community, John Hope Settlement House remains fully focused.  “ John Hope responds to and embraces the interests of all ages and all ethnic groups within a diverse and changing community.  John Hope provides leadership through comprehensive and dynamic human services, community outreach and advocacy for children, youth and families in Providence and beyond.  John Hope programs and services serve to:

•Strengthen families

•Foster leadership and youth development

•Broaden opportunities

  • Promote social, educational and civic improvement

Our Mission

The John Hope Community Association was the outgrowth of an organization formed in 1929 by public spirited Negros of Providence for the purpose of meeting and serving the social and recreational needs of the colored people of the city. First known as the Crispus Attucks Association, the agency was reorganized in 1937 and named in honor of the late Dr. John Hope, alumnus of Brown University and former President of Atlanta University.

Our History

15 Pratt Street

The John Hope Community Center opened on the East Side of Providence where it became a great factor in molding the lives and characters of the youth of the community, just as the man whose name the center bears, had so great a part in shaping the educational and cultural destinies of hundreds of black men and women.

Knight Street

The journey of the John Hope Settlement House’s many year’s of service to the community grew and spanned over many decades at the Knight Street location.

In 1939 the founding Articles of Incorporation of the John Hope Community association set a clear path for the generations to come:

Said corporation is constituted for the purpose of developing and maintaining civic, cultural and recreational interests to serve all ages and both sexes and to direct character building and community betterment programs among the citizens of Providence; aiming to merit the support of the civic welfare, educational and municipal agencies of the City in the development of its objectives and program.  It shall promote opportunities and facilities, not to exclude any group but particularly to include in all of its activities the participation of its Negro citizens in the community”

Not only did the John Hope Community Services expand, so too did the physical structure of the agency.  Through the hard work of the Board of Directors, staff, community partners, organizations, businesses, city, state and the community at large, the John Hope Settlement House campus grew to accommodate additional service and community needs.
